An action packed 4 Day Event
Discover the history of Castlebar and it’s significance at the heart of the 1798 rebellion.
A great chance to get the family out and learn about our wonderful towns rich heritage and have fun doing it!
It’s also a super opportunity to invite people who have moved further afield to come home and reconnect with family, friends and the town itself!

Day 1
Friday 3rd May 2024
Live Radio Broadcast
11A.M to 1P.M.
Mid West Radio live broadcast to launch and promote this years Races of Castlebar festival
Visit to Frenchill
5P.M.
Visit of French Delegation to Frenchill for a wreath laying ceremony and meeting of locals
March of the Pike Men
6.30P.M.
from Thomas Street to the 1798 Memorial, The Mall, Castlebar
The Irish Defence Forces will lead the parade followed by the Castlebar Town Band.
Gather at the Mall
7:00P.M.
The 1798 Memorial, The Mall, Castlebar.
Wreath laying ceremony and reading the Names of the Fallen
Commemoration
8P.M.
TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar
‘The Journey from La Rochelle to Castlebar’ – Commemoration of the Year of the French through Song, Poetry, Music & Story Telling.
During this event, Prizes for the School’s Races of Castlebar Competitions will be awarded.
Humbert Ball (Free Event)

Traditional dress encouraged but not mandatory.

Saturday 4th May
Park Run
9.30A.M.
Lough Lannagh
Get the Festivities off to a flyer on Saturday with the weekly running of the Park Run in Lough Lannagh.
Dragon Boat Race

Lough Lannagh Lake
This promises to be a great event on Lough Lannagh with great views on the beautiful lake.
Family Fun Day
11A.M. – 7.30P.M.
The Mall Castlebar
Follow up from the fun at Lough Lannagh with a stroll up to the Mall where there will be fantastic entertainment all day long.
Kiltimagh Pet Farm, Hog Roast, Amusements, Big Stage with Live Music featuring local talent, Food Stalls, Face painting and lots more on the day.
Daytime Walks & Talks

The Linenhall, Linenhall Street, Castlebar
The 1798 Rebellion—What Happened when the Muskets and Canon fell Silent? Finding the Mayo Men and Women of 1798 in the Public Archives and other Repositories—An illustrated lecture by Dr Michael O’Connor
3P.M.
The Mall, Castlebar
Unveiling of Pillory – unveiling event for new pillory & short talk on the history of pillories and stocks in County Mayo (10-15 mins) – Conor Smyth and Michael O’Connor
A great Photo opportunity for children & parents.
Day 3
Sunday 5th May
Family Fun Day
11A.M. – 7.30P.M.
The Mall Castlebar
Another full days entertainment on the Mall in Castlebar.
Kiltimagh Pet Farm, Hog Roast, Amusements, Big Stage with Live Music featuring local talent, Food Stalls, Face painting and lots more on the day.
Family Fun Day
5.30P.M. to 7.30P.M.
THE KILKENNYS play the Main Stage as the Headline Act of the Festival. They were in attendance last year and played a cracking set and are sure to impress again at this years festival.
Closing Ceremony
11P.M.
A MASSIVE FIREWORKS DISPLAY will be launched from the Castlebar Military Barracks, a great way to sit back and finish off the festivities.
Day 4
Monday 6th May
Day 4 Walks & Talks
3P.M.
The Four Prisons of Castlebar – a walk through the history of Imprisonment, Capital Punishment & Transportation in Castlebar 1700-1919. Guided Walk with Dr Michael O’Connor.
Meet at Parsons, Ellison Street, Castlebar – (Age 15+). Finish at TF Royal Hotel (Estimated length 60-90 mins).
